Honoring a Legacy, Building the Future

Juneteenth โ€” also known as Freedom Day, Black Independence Day, or Jubilee Day โ€” commemorates the moment on June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom โ€” more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Since then, Juneteenth has become a powerful symbol of Black resilience, celebration, and community. We honor that legacy with a festival that reflects both the history and the future โ€” bold, bright, and unified.

Led by Mayor Emma Sharif

With decades of service to Compton and a career grounded in education, infrastructure reform, and inclusive leadership, Mayor Emma Sharif is a powerful advocate for progress. From restoring bridges to planting trees, Mayor Sharif has made Compton a beacon of opportunity and change.

Her leadership in partnering with URBT for this celebration brings together culture, history, and hope for a bigger, brighter Compton.
